फ्रिदय २२.०६.००७
thats hindi for Friday 22.06.007 btw
well, neva a dull moment at the Festival lemme tell ya. things got off to a slow start atKwaCinema today. i arrived late, and was assigned popcorn duty. not Becos i was late, mostly cos our meister popper of corn is now in the Eastern Cape, catchin up on the family and prepping for the GramTowns Festival. our very own Karen L will be departin eastern shores for G-Town s'well later this coming week, to present Tin bucket Drum [*********]
Friday@KwaCinema was always gonna b a quiet one, what with Golden Flower screening at Suncoast. all the bunnies and their hares were there, being overwhelmed by grandeur and colour. some real Eye-candy say the crew that checked it out.
me, i was at Kwacinema checking out a movie i realli wanted to watch. it's called Strange Culture, and by the end of it, i was left reeling. seems there's a group of artists that are staging an art exhibition exposing the realities and dangers of GM food. they're cultivating some live bacteria and performing tests on foods, nothing very out of the ordinary. then, the protaganists wife passes away in her sleep. of cos, he discovers this, and calls the paramedics. they arrive, and with the police, begin to paint a sinister plot. before the cat knows it, off goes the husband to jail, arrested as a suspected bio-terrorist. his wifes body goes thru two autopsies and the FBI is pushing to try him under the 'Anti-Terror Bill'. i mean, c'mon. this guy is an artist making social commentary. what emerges is a harrowing personal tale of incarceration and persecution.
the underbelly of the American post 9-11 local (so-called) anti-terror campaign is shown. through recollections by those involved directly, we see how the FBI pushes the civilities of its own citizen in an uneducated attempt to squash 'bio-terrorism'. the effect of media in this film is strangely revealing, using clips of the initial report, and the following reports, where the truth behind the arrest was made apparent. it's the old struggle of one man to defeat an unjust systm, getting by with help from his friends. one can see the paranio involved in these times, as well as the effect 9-11 has had on the American psyche.
it's a fascinating story, moving, sweeping, but presenting facts from those connected to the incident (including fellow artists, defence team, gallery owners and the like). i didnt think much of the acting, even thought it a bit dodg at some sections.
this is a story that reveals so much of the hidden layers of America, and is 4 sure worth the expiry date. was also great to have an almost empty cinema to watch the movie in, bout as great as popping corns next to K8 (you still have one of the most bootiful smiles in Durban;)
intermision came and went amidst tinkling piano keys, and boom cha What Kind? appears. now i've gotta be honest in that i missed virtualli the entire movie. these are the things a popcorn operator must endure in order to do the bizness (;)
actualli, the square eyes, lack of sleep or lunch & sum gr8 company meant i skipped the last two screenings @KwaCinema. lotsa of bruin-ous (the main ou's) appeared to watch the first, shot in our own Wentworth. if i find someone to report on this, a away...
HINT HINT<> NUDGE... if you bean to watch this movie, or infact ANy movies, just post a review/picutres. alternatively mail to kwacinema@gmail.com with REVIEW: Name of Movie.Location (eg BAT center, Date and what u8. its a colab project, so pitch your fork IN>>
Late night visitors with strange accents as the overflow from Golden Flower stumbled onto KwaBar, bringing tales of elaborate costumes and tricki incestuous storylines. Grate 2c looking Glass out from behind his electronic instruments and front of the Bar. the venue eventualli closed down, and it was off off off to BBB for the revelers.
the Festival is buzzing with the decision by the Film And Pub board to restrict the viewing of a movie called Bog of Beast (Baixio Das Bestas). we'll keep you posted.
the other movie that apparently did NOT screen Friday night is Kaganof's SMS sugaman. well, well, perhaps Durban subscribes to the wrong network. but still...... Funny things be in the air already, and theres still two days of the weekend to go, and its only the FIRST weekend! guys, i will post and update on the movies that are dropped for the moment for whatever reasons, soon as i get the word from low down street level.
2mrw, the intrepid blogger hits the BAT center for (hopefully) the SMS sugarman workshop. here Kag n the boys are aiming to give us the lowdown on the biz of makin a movie wid ur cellphone (mobile is what they seem to call it on the net). the Saturday line-up at Kwacinema includes some amazing material. its the quest?on your environment section of Kwadiff.007
if i can take your attention back to the BAT, 2mrw, exactly one week after the June 16 celebrations, the Durban Youth in Film is hosting a slamming day on the deck. if you think hip hop, social issues, movies, friends, beats, rhymes, dancing and meeting people are cornerstones to a healthy life, then check the details out.
and so, and so, and my brain has fallen asleep more than ten hours ago, i have lost the ability to know if any of this makes sense or if i'm still using the Hindi text tool. i go to sleep now, dreaming silver screen dreams, approaching Question with no expectations, just ideals and ideas.
til next post...
peace
