Saturday & SunDay

Saturday….

A day of darker descent than yesterday, Saturday started of slowly but gently, like a lovers nibble on the ear good morning. Those jaws turned quickly to hyenas as I was forced to laugh at myself and the way the universe always has a bigger plan.

I'd plann'd to complete my video submission for the www.mobstar.co.za competition long ago. So there I am, and it’s a quarter-to-five and I'm still editing the second clip, and I'm meant to be in the projector's booth from 6-10 and the competition closes tonight, and I've got to throw my coin in t roll round the wishing well at least once. A blur of cuts, voice-takes, sending failed, and whoops of delight, as the bum made it to the seat for Bunny Chow.

Essentially the tale of three stand-up comedians that leave lovers and enemies behind to travel to a performance at Oppikoppi. A road trip with funny characters, hilarious events and a well-known bunch of actors, this movie clearly suffers from the cut-n-past mistakes of drawing in too much culture, and not exposing enough of what is there. The storyline was loosely setup for a quick string draw, but the directors lost their grip and frayed ends of a half-baked storyline appeared. [For the random character picked up by the three; insert Jon Depp's Hunter S character with the stranger they pick up at the beginning of Fear & Loathing.] Of all the situations the team could have faced and addressed in the little town scene, the one chosen shows the level of scripting involved. Something serious could have been developed through a conversation later in the movie referencing or commenting on it, tho it did serve to push the unlikedness of some characters, and the general theme of betrayal and deception. Sure, overall, the movie was funny, the Old Boy reference was enjoyed and the camera work, angles and tones were great!, wet it turn'd out to be a soggy chow.

Sunday..funday..and every1 was having fun sumwere else. Quiet nights at Kwacinema , Shooting Ghosts looked like Screening 2ghosts. The behind the scenes look at the shooting of a movie delved heavily into the production landscape, showing the real edginess that some shots take. The section of Ghosts with a submerged vehicle really was a near-death experience for the filming crew and actors, as the shots revealed broken sets.

Mahaleo was an inspirational tale of four musicians who play in a band, and how their daily lives intertwine. Social commentary and a great deal of culture was slipped through the content.

And that was how the KwaDiff007 rolled end credits, title sequence, cut.

FRIDAY Panoramic IceBoxxing….

Now this Friday, was a Friday I will remember. A day that involved lots of tromping round getting missions done. I was looking forward to a Festive Friday night, with Indian Ocean islands and the Massive IceBox on the roll. The evening did the day justice. Both events were commercially unstable. Not enough people arrived, not nearly as many as should have.

The choice of movies for the Panorama didn’t inspire death defying wheel stunts to get to KwaCinema at 6, surely though, there is a segment that would like to see these sorta movies, perhaps the location could have been accessible to foreigners, even guerilla screenings in Albert Park? There is a massive contingent of French speakers that live closer to the city that most of us do. The price of R15 was decent, so the real question is: did anyone advertise these movies in French?

Ice Boxx was a really sad affair, not entirely sad, but bittersweet, half-reluctant sad, like the way Durban gets sometimes. There were some really amazing storylines , animations and digital crafting projected at KwaCinema, indeed. The Balloon Monkey and the Bread with eyes that cries 'Loaf' when it cut it! The Lark video with a really pissed-off teddy bear! The fractal eye candy. The Dating Tips. It really was a great line-up of digital and animation trickery and wizardry, a sort of brain food for creatives. The one disappointing thing was the real lack of presence of anything related to IceBoxx or RustPunk. No music, no people, no sights, no sounds, no url links. It seemd as though the screenings were tossed aside as an after-something, rather than being the central connecting focal point and networking mechanism it could have been. I expected IceBoxx to forward us some correspondence, so that we could at least inform those that arrived, or that RustPunk could have sold a screening/party combo ticket. Just ideas from this dear..

KwaCinema Music Video Shoot - IceBox Party

Its not very important on the bigger radar, when you zoom into the sector, and see that this could have been an important engagement event, all parties will realise they'd miss a trick.

It's good to see that the Durban Electronic Musicians are getting together. Finally!

ThursDay 28 june 007

Well, well, its already drifted past, and slowly these eyes are uncurling, and peeking at this very circular world we live. In. DIFF007 has been and been scene, not a has-been scene but a token bar scene, with beers and popcorn.

I have been away from my desk, and so these posts are coming thru a little slower than I had hoped. Here are the final days' posts:

The WAVESCAPE Finale'.

I'm referring to, of course, the KwaCinema Finale' - a supreme evenings viewing, for water babies and land-lovers too. I've never ally been fascinated by 'surf genre' movies, cos it looks like surferWanking material. A Penthouse of Waves. Lots of them do have good music though. And this we like. Personal favourite was Glass Love. Even though I caught most of it in the foyer, the music had a driving element, that thing about the surfer way of life, the eternal search for the eternal wave. Any movie that features a track from Neil Young's 'On the Beach' album as part of the soundtrack, gets serious thumbsup! Great to have soothing, calming and terrifying waves to soundtrack the eyes.

The final movie, one the first I saw with my bum to a seat was Sipping Jetstreams. A moving collage of people and places from the world hand pasted together in a collage of discovery and delight. Really fractions of culture from places in the world, with the sea and the rhythm as the connector, this really had an impression on me. if you get a chance to see it, its worth the 50 minutes.

WedNesDay 27 june 007

so where did Tuesday disappear? up the rear of some of the chilliest weather us eastcoasters have scene inna while hey? precursor to the Icebox?? indeed, the signs are plentiful.

Wavescape has brought the massive to the independent, and Kwacinema has enjoyed it's run with Wavescape for this DIFF007. Tuesday and Wednesday saw the crowds drop a little (gettit? drop) becos the rain. still busy houses, and interesting bunch of peeps congregating. The PopCorn Machine has bin turning over at an alarming rate, producing a new breed of popcorn meisters, geared to increase your cinema experience.

tomorrow sees the end of the WaveScape@KwaCinema run. Theres somethings realli good looking for 2mrw, check www.myspace.com/kwacinema

Tonites Surfing experience was counterposed by a mad scramble against time and circumstance and rainy tarmac to get to watch the 'poopie' movie, that crazy schemed 'Aachi n Spacchi' well, Dy and I got to the Musgrave with just seven minutes off the start, but the good Doctor Ed broke the bad news-- sold out. not to waste a manic dash across town, we gt sum tea, and then dashed smack across town again, in an even larger state, to watch the laws of improbability and time bend themselves to catch the opening sequence. Schqwwweeeat!!!

so eventually, we settled down with a rad crowd to catch Princes. its screened a few times, but hey... itsa realli smartly imaged animation, moving from style to scene with a certain hey-ness about it. the storyline is just hardcore, the characters moving in their humanity and sense of destiny. the actual story seemed developed for this type of movie, rather than being sliced alive out of Life. nothing wrong with that, of course. ultimately a sad tale, Princes has gotten people talking positively about child pornography, and the untimely loss of innocence, much in the way that Bog Of Beast didnt. Except it was animated. Of course.

DIFF.007 as it enters the last weekend. WaveScape Feva has hit the surfing and film communities beeg time this week, with pulsing massive crowds. The opening night was packt like sardines inna can, yes it's true. No-one complained, cos the action on the screen was the real attraction.

WaveScape continues Wednesday and Thursday [27+28.06] with:

Monday 25.05.007

Wavescape time again, and the house was packed, ladies n gentlemen. DIFF007 started off slowly for the KwaCinema team, but Monday was pumping man. Opening night of the WaveScape Surf Film Festival, and over 100 bodies lined up for tickets, popcorn and bumseats. Mind you, there were quite a few on the steps as the house pushed to capacity and then some. Mind you, no-one was complaining, as the Absolute-ly visually stunning Mexico provided the backdrop for our first screening. Talk about a riveted audience… these guys n gals were positively getting OFF on the waves and curls.

And the mix, older, younger, boys n girls and their mums&dads too. This real mixed bag of Durban Allsorts were slightly disappointed that DIFF yielded another casualty to the lineup. Take note and beware that Thursdays screening of Bra Boys (Russel Crowe directed piece) will ALSO not be screened. Seems the producers were eventually not keen to have the US/Africa premier at our sleepy lil hollow after all. It seems they did show interest, which prompted the organisers to bill the show, but pulled out at the last minute. Rats!!!

We’re halfway thru DIFF007, and theres bean loadsa casualities, what with BogBeast, SMS and Bra Boys being yanked offline. Seeing things from the other side, the logistic and contractual issues abound, but surely the DIFF has a responsibility to the end-users know about these changes as EARLY as possible? It seems like im going on about this, but it really is that instrumental, I feel.

Tonights screening of Bra Boys was substituted by Chasing Bali and Sipping Jetstream. Visually sweeping, Bali had the audience under it’s spell. It’s real surfer wanking material, peeling waves and bronzed babes. Hey, who’s complaining?

This one blogger snuck out early to catch my choice for poster of the DIFf007- time. Itsa really stark and bizaare movie about a woman’s obsession with her boyfriend, and her belief that he is growing tired of her ‘old’ face. She disappears from his life without a trace, going into recovery from plastic surgery. What happens after this is a cruel twist of fate and a tale of love that wants to live, but is pushed around by the changing face of its subjects. Its predictable more so than I had expected, really forcing sum harsh images of plastic surgery onto the viewer. The music has that haunting element, and the sculptures that the couple visits are just amazing. Its definetly wirth a checkout, the next screening is at the Musgrave on Saturday at tenish, tho this may be clashing with Day Watch. Decisions, decisions…..

Til next post,

Tune out Weekend #!

Saturday 23/ Sunday 24 June 007

Tune Out>>

Tune out was the Kwacinema’s Weekend#1 documentary lineup. Intense, revealing and disturbing, the subject material switched from human tragedy to triumph, exploitation to revolution, shame at being part of the human race to the joy and ecstasy of being part of this world. It shone a torch down the dark caverns of our collective miseries and offered a light for all to attenuate, something to hold on to. It was heavy viewing for the projectionist.

As part of the Poverty and Inequality Festival, KwaCinema was proud to hostel Ejido – the story of how Europeans exploit event heir own for the sake of comfort and satisfaction. The Boy inside was an expose on Autism, teaching and sharing lots about an issue that does tend to lie latent in story telling. A world Without water confirms my decision to not consume Coca Cola products, as it present a far-too realistic tale of a planet that consumes more than is sustainable, and cares about profit above compassion. The privatization of water services in developing countries seems to result more often than not in poor people being excluded from their right to water. That a simploid creature like the human could think to claim ownership over water…..

Emmanuel’s Gift offered an uplifting mood to the evening, showcasing, of course, Emmanuel. E is a guy from Ghana born with one operational leg. In a bid to expose his countries disregard for the disabled (10% of the population has some disability), a letter is written to the Challenged Athletes Foundation, requesting a bicycle so that he can ride (one legged) across Ghana. From this point, the camera moves with Emmanuel, showing his trip across the country, his American visit to raise awareness, and his subsequent return to Ghana to champion the cause of the disabled. At first I tought E’s gift was his bicycle, but its actually about how much he gives to his people, the gift of aring enough to make a difference. This is a truly inspirational tale, one that makes me feel bad for being lazy, and not doing more than I am. It’s told in a way that pushes me to be better, and work harder, and appreciate my senses and limbs way much more.

Sunday’s line up was another assault on the conscience and senses, harrowing tales that show just how depraved man can be to his fellow man. Its not all bleakness and doom, as always, the human spirit tends to shine even in dark days. The closing film for Sunday was a really amazingly interesting documentary, the type that swing your emotion this way and that. I found myself feeling one way, being made to think I should feel another way, and eventually just feeling angry. It was Operation Filmmaker [screens at Gateway 01July at 2].

MTV shoots a short segment in Baghdad where they feature a young film maker standing in the shadow of his film school, now a shelled out building. This piece moves a production team to fly this young man out to serve as an intern on a movie set in Prague. Nina Davenport is assigned to cover his experiences, and within a short space of time every thing seems to go wrong. He is not happy, and it seems that the team did not research their subject properly. The story seems to want to go in one direction, but the reality of the young man and his motives eventually pull. It’s quite tense, its emotionally splitting, and ultimately a testament to the tenacity the documentator must hold to complete a story. Certainly, I learnt lots about the artform of documenting and allowing the story to unfold, and we had a great post movie dissection, even though the crowd was a bit small. Theres some vid clips of the session with audience and nina floating round. I will attempt to you tube it, or place it on the www.myspace.com/kwacinema portal.

Its back from reality and off to exotic locations from now til Saturday, when the flavor is Local, hip hop and bunny chow.

Peace to the square eyes

Saturday mjorn 23.06.007

good thing i have no expectations, or i'd be a scuppered fool. which many say i am neways. i dont listen to them. DIFF.007 took a few turns since last post, and some realli amazing twists in the 007 tale have emerged.

lets start with this:

now thats just ridiculous. and very very silly.

seems our frends the Thought Police thought that this movie was not suitable for screening as it encouraged child pornography. Fools. this movie is an expose of the very thing they claim its propagating. by using strong imagery [ young girl standing naked in front of older men while they masturbate] is meant to do exactly what the Film Board hasnt allowed. People can see the harsh realities of the situation, and appreciate and understand the pressing nature of child porn, trafficking and the such. instead, they prefer to stick our heads in the sand, while they stick fig leafs on the blemishes of our world.

its quite perverted in the sense that things can never be dealt with if they stay locked away. movies like these force the issue out of the cinema and into our daily lives. its not saying Look how kewl child porn is, its saying Look at how real it is, unstylised and bare. itsa cryin shame, and if ne1 readin this can point me int he direction as to how we as Festival Goers can protest or at lease let the Board know what we think of their decision, post it baby...

the DIFF cud use all the support they can get on issues like these, so lets see if we can do sumting.

DIFF cud also use a degree more intelligence in their information systeming. i'll tell ya why. this happi camper blogger wakes up early Saturday [first weekend] and is amped for the SMS Sugarman Workshop where Kaganof n others are planning to hold a 'workshop' on making films with cameras. the first screening of the movie was halted att he last minute tho, as my drunken Suncoast Media liaison informed me late Friday.

so before i mission down to Bat Center, i call the number in the Holy Guide, to confirm the Workshop's activation. 'Sure ting, says the voice, defn ON' blam, zap, kachuuuuu, and this guy is headin down the hill to get there in time. and of cos, nothing!

so, soon as i get back tot he pad, i call the number agin, expecting to chune the Bat Center guys for having not their ducks inna row at all., beeg surprise that the number is the cca. well, thats different.

this is the command center that didnt have information on their own operation. what it means to me, is that their information is not flowing back to the source, its not designed to loopback to all activelink points. and thats notta good thing. so im still waiting for some1 to explain it all to me

so what does this all mean? two movies pulled off the circuit, one for 'creating desire to stimulate intelligent conversation' and the other for a phantom reason. it may not seem like much, it means a lot on the ground, an unaccountable information system and a chain of command that lacks vision. mmmm

whats also emerged is the static nature of the current information flow within the parameters of the Festival. the internet site is not nearly as 'live' with its info as it should be, and the mechanisms used to transfer info inside are slow, old and unimaginative.

there are ways around it, ways to make the information 'softer' and more pliable and transferable. if the cca wants my twenty cents worth on the issue, they welcome to throw some dollars down my hat.

okay, off to the next part of the show

Friday 22.06.007

फ्रिदय २२.०६.००७

thats hindi for Friday 22.06.007 btw

well, neva a dull moment at the Festival lemme tell ya. things got off to a slow start atKwaCinema today. i arrived late, and was assigned popcorn duty. not Becos i was late, mostly cos our meister popper of corn is now in the Eastern Cape, catchin up on the family and prepping for the GramTowns Festival. our very own Karen L will be departin eastern shores for G-Town s'well later this coming week, to present Tin bucket Drum [*********]

Friday@KwaCinema was always gonna b a quiet one, what with Golden Flower screening at Suncoast. all the bunnies and their hares were there, being overwhelmed by grandeur and colour. some real Eye-candy say the crew that checked it out.

me, i was at Kwacinema checking out a movie i realli wanted to watch. it's called Strange Culture, and by the end of it, i was left reeling. seems there's a group of artists that are staging an art exhibition exposing the realities and dangers of GM food. they're cultivating some live bacteria and performing tests on foods, nothing very out of the ordinary. then, the protaganists wife passes away in her sleep. of cos, he discovers this, and calls the paramedics. they arrive, and with the police, begin to paint a sinister plot. before the cat knows it, off goes the husband to jail, arrested as a suspected bio-terrorist. his wifes body goes thru two autopsies and the FBI is pushing to try him under the 'Anti-Terror Bill'. i mean, c'mon. this guy is an artist making social commentary. what emerges is a harrowing personal tale of incarceration and persecution.

the underbelly of the American post 9-11 local (so-called) anti-terror campaign is shown. through recollections by those involved directly, we see how the FBI pushes the civilities of its own citizen in an uneducated attempt to squash 'bio-terrorism'. the effect of media in this film is strangely revealing, using clips of the initial report, and the following reports, where the truth behind the arrest was made apparent. it's the old struggle of one man to defeat an unjust systm, getting by with help from his friends. one can see the paranio involved in these times, as well as the effect 9-11 has had on the American psyche.

it's a fascinating story, moving, sweeping, but presenting facts from those connected to the incident (including fellow artists, defence team, gallery owners and the like). i didnt think much of the acting, even thought it a bit dodg at some sections.

this is a story that reveals so much of the hidden layers of America, and is 4 sure worth the expiry date. was also great to have an almost empty cinema to watch the movie in, bout as great as popping corns next to K8 (you still have one of the most bootiful smiles in Durban;)

intermision came and went amidst tinkling piano keys, and boom cha What Kind? appears. now i've gotta be honest in that i missed virtualli the entire movie. these are the things a popcorn operator must endure in order to do the bizness (;)
actualli, the square eyes, lack of sleep or lunch & sum gr8 company meant i skipped the last two screenings @KwaCinema. lotsa of bruin-ous (the main ou's) appeared to watch the first, shot in our own Wentworth. if i find someone to report on this, a away...

HINT HINT<> NUDGE... if you bean to watch this movie, or infact ANy movies, just post a review/picutres. alternatively mail to kwacinema@gmail.com with REVIEW: Name of Movie.Location (eg BAT center, Date and what u8. its a colab project, so pitch your fork IN>>

Late night visitors with strange accents as the overflow from Golden Flower stumbled onto KwaBar, bringing tales of elaborate costumes and tricki incestuous storylines. Grate 2c looking Glass out from behind his electronic instruments and front of the Bar. the venue eventualli closed down, and it was off off off to BBB for the revelers.

the Festival is buzzing with the decision by the Film And Pub board to restrict the viewing of a movie called Bog of Beast (Baixio Das Bestas). we'll keep you posted.

the other movie that apparently did NOT screen Friday night is Kaganof's SMS sugaman. well, well, perhaps Durban subscribes to the wrong network. but still...... Funny things be in the air already, and theres still two days of the weekend to go, and its only the FIRST weekend! guys, i will post and update on the movies that are dropped for the moment for whatever reasons, soon as i get the word from low down street level.

2mrw, the intrepid blogger hits the BAT center for (hopefully) the SMS sugarman workshop. here Kag n the boys are aiming to give us the lowdown on the biz of makin a movie wid ur cellphone (mobile is what they seem to call it on the net). the Saturday line-up at Kwacinema includes some amazing material. its the quest?on your environment section of Kwadiff.007

if i can take your attention back to the BAT, 2mrw, exactly one week after the June 16 celebrations, the Durban Youth in Film is hosting a slamming day on the deck. if you think hip hop, social issues, movies, friends, beats, rhymes, dancing and meeting people are cornerstones to a healthy life, then check the details out.

and so, and so, and my brain has fallen asleep more than ten hours ago, i have lost the ability to know if any of this makes sense or if i'm still using the Hindi text tool. i go to sleep now, dreaming silver screen dreams, approaching Question with no expectations, just ideals and ideas.

til next post...

peace

Stop Animation!!!!!

why wud u wanna stop animation? the magic world where fantasy meets fantasy, and building grow legs and trumpets emit mouse dancing troupes. take away the punctuation, and you get it... Gettit?

yeah, Vega School of BeRanDing and Con-Muni-cake Shins hosted a realli rad workshop this afternoon. it was the stopframe animation workshop [page in the guide] . strange cos the only thing rusty was my car, though there were a few punks there. (icebox is meant to be in association with RustPunk, says the Holy Guide).

it was a most delightful tessa C who took us thru the basics of stop animation. what to do, the best way to do it, the elements necessary, and Bless her Heart, the importance of the STORY. i've got some shots of the projection screens with some cue/clues, which i'll post soon as i get sum airtime.

we then hadda quik qna, again very lighthearted, where everyone was clearly amazed by the stop-anim vids she showed us [ms petite and mad tea party Rockd! think i wudda eaten them biscuits before they got shot.

and then, thanks to the rad Vega-rites, we used light boxes, lighting and tripods (and play dough, of cos) to create our own animation. very hads-on, very tasty dough.

yo, i'll drop the pics up soon [all pics taken with NokiaN73]

hopin to stick sum them vids up too.

the archive continues....

OPENING NYT ~ Thursday 21 June 007

Thursday 21 June 007

Solstice Day around the World, and the KwaCinema Project has arrived!!!

first screenings for DIFF007

Selection#1 - Radiant City -

a well told story of surburbia and the effects of modern life on the Moss Family in a town in America. Shaky cameras and straight face interviews give the documentary feel, while the narrative of the family delivers a realism. the tale eventually meanders into not much other than postulations and examinations of suburbia on the human psyche. there's a twist at the end, a smart one.

ultimately poor delivery of what could have been either funny, provoking, or insightful. the director/s seemed to try for all of the above, with expert opinions. they missed on all levels. the ending, meant to be a climatic 'Oohhhh....', turned out to be a 'OH?' and called to question the entire movie. worth watching if you got nothing else to do, and nowhere else to be.

Selection #2 - Shakti Timeless -

a DVD presentation of interviews and live performances from the legendary Shakti outfit. really frank words from Zakir Hussain and John Mc drove this stationary piece. for someone not interested in music, Indian music, Fusion/world music, this might have been a bit of a 'bore' compared to high action thriller releases.

for those that were present, it was a revealing insight into what probably is the first 'world-music' genre outfit. Exposing the manner of fusing Northern and Southern indain music, as well as its overall integration with western music,it was really great 2 hear from these pioneers.

the performances were also great, almost teasing the audience into buying tickets for a concert. a short and direct chat with the filmaker after the screening was also a treat, as he gave a brief rundown of his contact with the master musicians, and the contractual problems involved in dealing with universal Music, the distributors and owners of the copyright material.

Selection #3 - Me, Cyprien and the Others -

a short film about the 'coming out' of the cameraman, and his reluctance and hesitations in sharing his potential homosexuality to his friend Cyprien. this is juxtaposed sweetly with Cyprien's upcoming wedding. it's a very handheld feel, with the cameraman engaging directly with the subject and off scene with the audience. the buildup was pretty even, leaving the viewers wondering how Cyprien will react to the news, considering his homophobia. ultimately, the prizes of friendships and respect emerge, as Cyprien gets married.

highlights are of course, the Amelie theme music for the wedding sequence, and a Really funny 'first-toke' scene, rivalling the 'come-on' scene in human Traffic.

dont go out of your way to watch this 35 minute flick, but dont avoid it either. could be a useful pointer to local filmakers on how to engage with their subjects.

*************************************nd*********************************************

and as the wine and beer flowed after, and the sexy piano began to jive, the KwaCinema called curtains on the opening night. a relatively quiet night, thankfully. this weekend is a long production of very, very heavy documentaries, and the Wavescape weeknight screenings should be off the barometer.

i'm off to the Vega School 'Stop Animation' workshop Friday, and then it's Strange Culture time.

dont forget to check out the pictures at this operator is keeping those eyes peeled and camera clicking.
